The wait is almost over as Gameweek 19 serves up the biggest game of the 2020/21 Premier League to date as the top two meet at Anfield.
Liverpool vs Man Utd is the ultimate grudge match in English football, and this year’s first North West derby has even more riding on it than usual. Both rivals are firmly in the hunt for the EPL title for the first time in years as they clash on Merseyside.
We’re back with our latest set of Premier League betting predictions…
English Premier League Predictions
It’s not just the North West derby that could spark some fireworks this weekend.
Gameweek 19 begins with a spicy Black Country derby as bitter West Midlands rivals Wolves and West Brom meet for the first time as league opponents in nearly a decade. Both sides will be looking at this fixture as a golden chance to reset their seasons.
Wolves were widely expected to be fighting for a Champions League place at the start of this campaign, but poor form over the last few weeks has seen them slip into lower mid-table, in what has unquestionably been Nuno Espirito Santo’s leanest spell in charge of the club.
Things haven’t exactly been easy for his opposite number Sam Allardyce, either. The go-to relegation firefighter in the Premier League has suffered a difficult start with the Baggies after 4-0 and 5-0 defeats in recent league games, topped off by an embarrassing FA Cup defeat at the hands of League One club Blackpool.
Local bragging rights aside, this looks a crunch game for both teams.
Attack could be the best form of defence in Saturday’s second fixture. Leeds Utd and Brighton have both earned plaudits this season for their courageous styles of play, but both teams need wins for different reasons.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side will be looking for instant redemption after a humiliating FA Cup exit at the hands of fourth tier Crawley Town last week, while the visiting Seagulls are chasing just a third win of the season in the Premier League. Another defeat for Graham Potter’s side would hardly calm talk of a return to the EFL Championship after a four year stay in the top flight for Albion.
West Ham Utd are in the hunt for a top half finish after a solid first full campaign for David Moyes. The Scotsman will be hoping his side’s recent stumbles at home don’t continue against a hard-working Burnley.
Another side finally getting some reward for their own disciplined work ethic are Fulham. The Cottagers took a point away from London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night and will be hoping to continue their good run of form at home to out-of-sorts Chelsea.
This is one of the more low-key London derbies but defeat for Frank Lampard could spell trouble given the Blues have drifted out of title contention, with a guaranteed place in next year’s Europa League not even looking nailed on considering their current form.
Saturday’s action all signs off at the King Power as two surprise top four contenders go head-to-head. Leicester City will be hoping their indifferent home form doesn’t continue against strong travellers Southampton.
With Aston Villa and Everton now rescheduled, it’s a later start than usual for Premier League fans on Sunday.
Sheffield Utd and Tottenham Hotspur kick off proceedings, with the Blades buoyant after finally ending their miserable start to the season with a first league win against Newcastle. Chris Wilder’s side might just fancy their chances of doubling their tally against a Spurs side struggling to move up through the gears in recent games.
That’s the appetiser ahead of the game of the weekend from Anfield.
Can Man Utd pull further clear of second-place Liverpool with a win at the home of their rivals, or will this finally be the match where the Reds re-assert their title-winning credentials?
Either way, expect it to be a jittery affair.
A nervy point apiece for those two sides might be the perfect result for Man City. That’s provided they can swat away Crystal Palace to close the gap on the current top two – no done deal for Pep Guardiola’s side. The Eagles have impressed on both of their last two trips to the Etihad, picking up a win and a draw.
Finally, Gameweek 19 ends with a slice of Monday night football from the Emirates as Arsenal host Newcastle Utd.
The sides only met a week ago in the FA Cup where the Gunners needed extra time to squeeze past their visitors from the north-east.
Can they see off the Magpies in 90 minutes this time around?
