The highest-ranked football league in Nigeria, the Nigerian Professional Football League, is approaching the half-way point of the 2020/21 season.

Usual suspects, Enyimba FC of Aba, Enugu Rangers, and Kano Pillars are all close to the top of the standings, but surprise contender Kwara United is currently leading the table at this stage of the competition. However, it is very tight with the top four teams separated by just a single point, whilst 5th-placed Enyimba are only three points further back but have four games in hand due to their involvement in the Confederation Cup.

Plateau United, who were leading the table last season before it was cancelled, have found this season more difficult and currently sit in 12th place, albeit only eight points from the top.

NPFL Predictions and Tips: Matchday 18

To please our esteemed readers who are followers of the local league and like to place a bet on their fancies, our in-house team of experts have researched in detail and found the best options in the market for each match to pick from.

Adamawa Utd vs Wikki Tourist

These teams played out a goalless draw last year, the only time they have met since 2007. With both teams in poor form, each winning just one of their last five matches, there shouldn’t be much to separate them again here.

TIP: Full-time draw.

Akwa United vs Lobi Stars

Akwa are in great form at the moment, winning seven and drawing two of their last 10 games. Lobi Stars have lost their last four away games and that run is likely to continue here.

TIP: Akwa United to Win.

Enyimba vs Dakkada FC

Everything here points to a home win, with Enyimba currently looking the strongest team in the league, against Dakkada, who although sitting in 8th-place have lost their last six away games. Five of those matches have had over 2.5 goals, and that may be the value bet here.

TIP: Over 2.5 goals.

Jigawa Golden Stars vs MFM FC

Two teams in the lower reaches of the table. Preference is given to the Golden Stars, who have won four of their seven home games this season, whilst MFM have yet to taste victory on their travels.

TIP: Jigawa Golden Stars to win.

Kano Pillars vs Heartland

The league table suggests high-flying Kano should be strong favourites here, however Heartland are not the easiest team to beat. Despite sitting in mid-table, they have lost just one in their last 10 matches and are more than capable of snatching a draw here.

TIP: Full-time draw.

Katsina United vs Kwara United

We are backing Katsina to take a point off current table toppers Kwara. Despite their lofty position, Kwara have only won twice in their last seven games, both of which were against teams currently in the bottom four. Katsina beat second-placed Enugu Rangers in their last home game, so won’t be daunted by taking on the leaders.

TIP: Full-time draw.

Nasarawa United vs Abia Warriors

Home form could swing this in Nasarawa’s favour, with them winning six of their eight home games to date. Abia have yet to win away this season, posting five draws and three defeats on away soil.

TIP: Nasarawa United to win.

Plateau United vs Enugu Rangers

Plateau United are still trying to recreate the form of last season and take on second-placed Enugu Rangers. However, their home form is still strong this season and the points could be shared here.

TIP: Full-time draw.

Rivers United vs Sunshine Stars

Rivers United are within touching distance of the top of the table and will be looking for a response following their 4-1 loss at Lobi Stars last weekend. Sunshine Stars have lost their last two games, and not won in five, so could be obliging opponents for a bounce back by the home team. We are taking them to go on the attack in a free scoring game and take the over goal line at 2.5 for our tip.

TIP: Over 2.5 goals.

Warri Wolves vs Ifeanyi Ubah – DRAW

Two teams struggling at the bottom of the table meet in a relegation battle. Warri Wolves have drawn four of their last five games, Ifeanyi have drawn three of their last five, so the indicators point to another stalemate here.

TIP: Full-time draw.
