On the 6th of December, the Nigerian Professional Football League will resume after the clubs and the League Management Committee agreed the start date for a new season.
The previous season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Upon cancellation, the league management announced that there would be no champion or relegated teams for the cancelled season. This means the present season will be started by the same set of teams.
But here’s more news for you… after the checks done on each football league stadium by the league management, only 13 stadia made the cut to host games for the commencement of the new season, which will force some teams to play away from their traditional home pitches. Teams that are being affected are Jigawa Golden Stars who will be based in Katrina, Plateau United who are to play in Bauchi, Adamawa United who will host opponents in Bombe and Ifeanyi Ubah FC who might play in Aba or the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin.
So, when placing your bets on the forthcoming matches, you should consider that some ‘home’ teams are not playing at their regular stadiums.

Qualification for continental competitions
After the resumption of the League was made known, it was also announced that the Nigerian representatives in the continental football competitions have been pitched against their respective opponents in the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederations Cup.
In the draw for the CAF Champions League, Plateau United will play host to Simba FC of Tanzania, while Enyimba International FC has an away date with Rahino FC from Burkina Faso in the first legs of the preliminary round. The two-legged ties are scheduled for the last weekend in November and the first weekend of December.
The opening CAF Confederations Cup matches are scheduled for the same two weekends, with the first legs seeing Kano Pillars playing ASC Jaraaf of Senegal and Rivers United against Futuro Kings of Equatorial Guinea.
The aforementioned clubs from Nigeria were in the reckoning for the league title in the previous season before it was brought to a premature end and will all be expected to vie once more for the chance to be crowned the King of the NPFL.
These four clubs will also be playing their opening Champions League and Confederations Cup home and away matches just before the season starts; will this give them a fitness advantage having played some competitive matches already?
