EPL Gameweek 12 | Analysis & Prediction For The Manchester Derby

The spotlight is on the Manchester Derby this weekend and we are predicting an exciting matchup.

What a weekend it promises to be for football viewers, fans and neutrals as the English Premier League serves up the latest Manchester derby, a game which has rarely been short on incident in recent seasons.

Manchester United used to dominate this fixture during Sir Alex Ferguson’s long reign at the club, but it’s City who have increasingly had the upper hand over the last decade. Right now, the tide seems to be turning in favour of the blue half of Manchester City, given City have finished above Utd in every season since 2013.

Manchester United have found it hard since 2013 to reach the heights they attained regularly during the Ferguson era, when they bossed the English Premier League with their stylish and entertaining football. Managers have come and gone with the aim of reviving the ailing giant but all have found it hard to restore the club to former glories. Current incumbent, club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, continues to divide opinions among the fanbase.

We’ve looked into the form of the two rivals to try and predict the outcome of the Manchester derby.

In the ongoing 2020/21 season, both teams are still trying to hit a consistent run of form, with both currently sitting outside the top five. Like so many sides, neither team has been helped by the lack of a proper pre-season which would have helped put them in good stead and condition to start the new season fresh.

Injuries to key players have also affected the plans of both teams to perform on the field of play. Players such as Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay, Anthony Martial and Sergio Agüero have missed matches due to injuries and suspension which has affected both teams to some extent.

The form of some players that the teams depend on are also an issue in the camps of both clubs. Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial are an example in the camp of Manchester United as they’ve failed to perform to their usual standards when presented with an opportunity to showcase their talents, while it still feels as if Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus could be about to explode back into life for City this winter.

Defensively, both clubs will be looking to improve after conceding 10+ goals in the league. This may result in the match producing more goals than expected if the attackers grab their chances. Manchester United have conceded in almost all the league matches they’ve taken part in this season, with the highest being the six goals conceded in a match against Tottenham Hotspur, while Manchester City look to be in better shape recently after recording back-to-back clean sheets in the league.

On the attacking side, both clubs seem to be doing well, given they both boast an array of attacking threats. Man Utd have scored at least three goals in three of their last four league games, while Manchester City have hit seven without reply in their last two games.

Both teams have been guilty of inconsistency at times this season, but Man City look to be hitting form at just the right time to make it a miserable week for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Red Devils crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday and look vulnerable should they make another slow start to a game this weekend.
