The German Bundesliga, which is the highest ranked football league in Germany and one of the “big five” European leagues, is back on our screen this midweek to serve us a tantalising top-of-the-table clash between Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund. Both teams are hoping they can stop Bayern Munich from winning a ninth consecutive Bundesliga title. In recent seasons they have performed consistently, but only Dortmund have come close to dethroning the champions, falling short by just two points in season 2018/19.
In the ongoing 2020/21 season, Bayern have not looked so invincible at times, with only five wins to show from their previous nine league matches. Despite that, they still sit four points clear at the top of the current table. The chasing pack will be hoping the gap can remain manageable as they try to stay in touch with the defending champions. Heading into this match, Leverkusen and Dortmund sit in third and fourth respectively, seven points adrift of Bayern
Looking at the head-to-head records, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund have met 98 times, with Borussia Dortmund holding the bragging rights with a total of 42 wins as opposed to Bayer Leverkusen’s 31, with 25 matches ending in stalemate. That counts for little in the present Bundesliga season with the teams only separated in the league by goal difference. Leverkusen have proved slightly the more difficult to beat, drawing more matches than their rivals and conceding four fewer goals. Borussia Dortmund have already tasted defeat five times in 16 matches, including a 5-1 reverse at home to VfB Stuttgart. That result was the one which finally cost manager Lucien Favre his job at a team expected to challenge for honours.
Matches such as this sometimes have little to do with the form of both teams as both sides are desperate for a win. Regular punters will be aware of that. Only a less experienced bettor tries to determine the outcome of a game just by their ranking in the league table. Our team of experts at Marathonbet has looked deeper into the data and statistics to help our esteemed readers when making their selections for the big match.
Form against Top Teams
Against teams currently in the top six, Bayer Leverkusen has lost two and drawn two in the ongoing 2020/21 season, while Borussia Dortmund has fared better with two wins and three losses. That may count for less in the scheme of things when the match gets underway. They will both be hoping to bounce back from disappointing results at the weekend, Leverkusen falling to a 1-0 defeat away at Union Berlin, while Dortmund were held 1-1 at home by struggling Mainz.
Since the 2017/18 season, they have met six times in the Bundesliga. Borussia Dortmund have the better recent record, victorious in four of those matches, with one match ending in a draw and Bayer Leverkusen claimed the full points in the other.
Factors and Key Men
Bayer Leverkusen may recall striker Lucas Alario to the starting line-up. Despite losing his place recently to Patrik Schick, and starting the last seven matches on the bench, he remains the leading scorer this season with 12 goals in total, eight of those coming in the Bundesliga. The Leverkusen attack is complemented by Nadiem Amiri, who has six assists to his name already this season. Leon Bailey is another who has contributed his fair share of both goals and assists from the wing.
Borussia Dortmund have been relying heavily on Erling Haaland to supply the goals and, unfortunately, he is still currently working his way back to full match fitness. However, two goals against top four rivals RB Leipzig nine days ago suggest he will be firing on all cylinders again very soon. In his absence, Dortmund only won two of their five Bundesliga matches, with the likes of Jadon Sancho and Thorgan Hazard failing to take up the baton and lead from the front.
The upcoming fixture is one which could produce any result, but we are predicting it to end in a stalemate in a game neither side can really afford to lose if they want to keep leaders Bayern within reach.
